Vietnam has officially entered a new chapter in its stock-market development. On September 21, Vietnamese equities joined FTSE Russell's emerging-market indexes, moving the country further into the global institutional investment universe after years of market reforms. The change may appear technical, but its implications could be much larger. FTSE Russell estimates that the upgrade could eventually redirect as much as $6 billion into Vietnamese equities as index-tracking funds adjust their portfolios. And foreign investors are already paying attention.
